5 Female Directors Who Are Creating Their Own Identity

All hail to these great female directors!. They have brought cinema to a new perspective, a women’s perception of directing. Right from the intoxicating romances to gripping thrillers, they have produced a diverse collection which proves that women have in common a great art in directing.

1.  Kathyrn Bigelow

In 2009, Filmmaker Kathyrn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for the best director for her movie “The Hurt Locker”. Born on November 27, 1951, in San Carlos, California. As a young girl, she was inspired by her father who wanted to be a great cartoonist. Part of her interest in art had something to do with her father’s yearning for something he could never have. She studied painting and moved to film as she recognised that film could reach a wider audience.

2. Kelly Reichardt

Kelly Reichardt is an American film director and screenwriter. She is known for her minimalist style of which the theme revolves around working-class characters in small, rural communities. She was born in Miami, Florida, developed a passion for photography. In 1994, she released her debut film, River of Grass and was nominated by the Boston Globe. 

3. Lisa Cholodenko 

Lisa Cholodenko is an American film director and screenwriter who directed the film High Art (1998). She was born on June 5, 1964, and grew up in a liberal Jewish family. At 17, the queer life cinema influenced her where she primarily directs films and television surround feminism and LGBTQIA community. 

4. Deep Mehta

Deep Mehta is an Indo-Canadian film director and screenwriter well known for her Elements Trilogy. She was born in Amritsar, Punjab, graduated with a degree in Philosophy. She was working as a film distributor that made educational films and documentaries for the Indian Government. After the success of her trilogy, she collaborated on the screenplay for Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. 

5. Gauri Shinde

Gauri Shinde is a feature film director and ad-film. She was born in Pune and graduated from SIMC in Pune. Her aspiration into film making started since her days in college. She made her directorial debut with English Vinglish (2012) and was featured on Redcliff’s list of “ Bollywood’s 5 best Directors 2012.
