Asus has been on rage this year with a very frequent release of its ZenFone and Fonepad device. While some attacked the budget segment, some were meant for the mid-ranged segment. All the Asus devices launched this year have had a decent response, around the world and in India. Probably that’s why the brand decided to launch its Fonepad 7 (FE170CG) in India. Released in the first week of August, the Asus Fonepad 7 will cost you Rs. 8,999. The tablet was first introduced in April and was launched in Thailand in May for THB 4190 which sums to about Rs. 7,690.

Look and Display

The Asus Fonepad 7 (FE170CG) looks quite beautiful with its slim chassis. The tablet sports a rectangular body with curved corner – a very common silhouette for devices these days. However, the Asus Fonepad manages to carry it well. Weighing at 290 grams, the tablet measures 192x110.8x10.7 mm! The sleek device is available in four colors – Black, White, Red and Blue. The rear of the Fonepad carries the primary camera along with a significant Asus branding. The front is dominated by a 7 inch LED Backlight WSVGA display with a resolution of 1024x600. This translates to a pixel density of 169ppi which is significantly less than what is expected on a device with a 7 inch screen. The display comes with an Anti-Fingerprint coating. The rest of the fascia of the Fonepad carries branding on the bottom and front camera on the top. The volume rockers and the power button find their way up on the right edge of the tablet.

OS and Processor

This voice-calling tablet runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with a ZenUI skin and can be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat. Powered by a dual core Intel Atom Z2520 ‘Cover Trail+’ processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, the Fonepad comes with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (entailing 4 threads) along with 1 GB of RAM. The device is available in both single SIM and Dual SIM variants.

Storage, Camera and Other Specs

The Asus Fonepad 7 comes in two variants in terms of internal storage – 8 GB and 4 GB. Both the variants are compatible to microSD storage expansion of up to 64 GB. Asus is offering the buyers with free 5 GB cloud storage on Asus Webstorage for lifetime and an additional 11 GB for the first year of the buy.

The device, like other tablets doesn’t come with a great camera. A 2 megapixel rear snapper with autofocus and a 0.3 megapixel front camera is all you get.

Connectivity options in the Fonepad FE170CG include Wi-Fi 802 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, Miracast, GPS/A-GPS and 3G HSPA+.

The 15Wh Li-polymer battery is rated to deliver 10 hours of battery life along with 619 hours of 3G standby time and 30 hours of 3G talk time.

The Asus Fonepad FE170CG is an average tablet and comes with decent features for its price. While the display and the camera come off as a little disappointing, the rest of the features compensate for it.
