Launched in April in conjunction with budget smartphone HTC Desire 210 Dual SIM was the HTC’s latest mid range smartphone, HTC Desire 816. The smartphone is now available in India via an e-commerce website and is priced at 24,450 INR. While the brand promised that the smartphone will be available to the mass market after two weeks of its launch, which was in late April, the HTC Desire 816 never hit the store shelves in time. However, the smartphone is now available at various e-commerce websites and was first seen listed at Infibeam at 24,450 INR and on Flipkart at 24,490 INR. Interestingly, the phone is priced higher than the official launch price tag which was 23,990 INR.
The Desire 816 strikes the user with its sleek and stylish design. Not anything new as the brand has always provided with eye-candy smartphones. The power button and the volume rockers find their way to the left edge of the phone and are done in metal. The rear case of the phone is too smooth to get a grip on. There is a high probability that the phone slips out of your hands. Despite the presence of a large screen, the phone fits snugly in hand. The Desire 816 comes with a non removable back cover. While the nano-SIMs and SD card slots can be found on the right edge, the dual speakers take positions on both the edges. Some of the space can be seen wasted with the HTC logo just below the virtual navigation keys.
The HTC Desire 816 does not come with a Full HD or a qHD display which is rather surprising. Instead, the phone features a Super LCD2 with a resolution of 720p. The display screen offers crisp images and sports great viewing angles. HTC Desire 816 offers a good video experience.
Powered by 1.6 GHz quad core Snapdragon 500 processor, the HTC Desire 816 sports a 1.5 GB RAM. The processor is on par with other smartphones in this price range. The benchmark results are not fantastic but a regular user will have no reason to complain while operating an HTC Desire 816. The apps launch without a single hint of lag and multi tasking is quite smooth. However, the phone has a little heating issues. Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, the HTC Desire 816 also comes with HTC Sense which is one of the best UI we have ever seen.
Internal memory storage of 8GB can be seen as a little low at this price point. The memory can be expanded up to 128 GB.
The rear 13 megapixel snapper features f/2.2 lens which makes the 816 stand out from the rest of the smartphones in this range. Low light images are crisp and not at all noisy. While an LED flash accompanies the rear camera, a 5 megapixel front facing camera is also on board.
HTC Desire 816 presents itself as a good phone considering the features and the price. There is nothing very new or innovative about the phone yet, for the moment, Desire 816 appears as good value for money.
