Counting of votes to the legislative
assemblies of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assal and the union territory of
Puducherry is now over. Mamata Banerjee and TMK bagged an easy victory in West
Bengal, defeating the BJP quite convincingly. DMK came back to power in Tamil
Nadu after a long wait of 10 years. The LDF under Pinnarayi Vijayan has
retained Kerala; Assam decided to vote for BJP again.
The Assembly elections 2021 were conducted
amidst severe rise in Covid-19 cases across India. A 2nd wave has hit the
country and created an unprecedented crisis. Hospitals struggle with oxygen
supplies and beds, while blood banks are running out of plasma the situation is
weak in the country.
Mamta Banerjee's Trinamool Congress secured
more than 200 seats out of the 294 seats that were up for grabs. BJP could not
make a turn around even after putting out significant rallies and campaigning.
"Bengal has managed to save India",said Mamta. Although Mamta was
pushed out by BJP's Suvendhu Adhikari in Nandigram.
In the south, Tamil Nadu saw the rise of
DMK as it returned to power after 10 years. DMK was successful in defeating its
arch rival AIADMK, which also happens to have an alliance with the Bharatiya
Janata Party. MK Stalin and his allies held on to their 149 seats and the
AIADMK managed to secure 85 seats.
In Kerala, the reigning party LDF won 97
out of the 140 seats and has smashed a 40-year old tradition by getting elected
again by the Keralites. The Congress-led UDF managed to win 43 seats. BJP could
not even win 1 seat as they had to settle for a duck in Kerala. Pinnarayi
Vijayan the leader of LDF and the current Chief Minister of Kerala will
continue for another tenure.
In Assam, the ruling BJP managed to hold on
by winning 76 out of the 126 seats, to retain power. The disappointing result
for Congress was evident in Assam as well.
N Rangaswamy's AINRC-led alliance - of
which the BJP is part - won 30 assembly seats while the Congress Party managed
to hold 8 seats.
