More Twist In Sunanda Pushkar’s Death

According to latest news reports from NDTV in a latest twist Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of the Forensic Department at AIIMS told NDTV “We have only said death was due to poisoning,” after the reporter asked if the death was homicide or homicidal. It has been almost one year since the death of Sunanda Pushkar back in 17th January 2013. She was 52 years old and married to Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor at the time of her death which now has been called as murder.

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Tuesday said “On Dec. 29, the medical board gave us a report, and the main point in that report was one: The death was unnatural." Before Sunanda Pushkar died she had accused her husband of infidelity and the rumors of him having an affair with Pakistan journalist Mehr Tarar. After her sudden death the case became one of the most sensational news events.

This case has now taken a political angle with Subramanian Swami of the BJP calling the death of Mr Tharoor’s wife as a “Well planned murder.” When Ms. Pushkar died the Congress party was in power and the doctor who led the post-mortem team said last summer that he had come under pressure to change his findings and had resisted, according to local news reports. However the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, denied that account in a statement, according to the Press Trust of India.

In a statement her husband Shashi Tharoor said “I am stunned to hear that the Delhi Police have filed a case of murder against unknown persons in the demise of my late wife Sunanda," he wrote. He said he would cooperate fully with the police and hoped that "the unvarnished truth should come out."

The murder of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, will be handled by a Special Investigation Team, said Delhi Police Chief B S Bassi today. Commissioner Bassi said “we have constituted a SIT that will be monitored by DCPs and ACPs," and "As far as questioning of Shashi Tharoor is concerned, it was done and it will be done again if necessary." He further said "whatever can be shared with the media will be done as and when more details emerge," "We will take all necessary steps as per our investigation plan. Investigators are going to take a closer look the puncture mark between the index and middle fingers of her right hand.
