According to latest report from Times of India a massive fire caused by firework display which caused the blaze at the Puttingal temple in the coastal town of Paravur located about 60 kms from Thiruvananthapuram has taken the lives of 105 people so fat and over 350 wounded with burn injurys. To help with rescue efforts air force helicopters have been dispatrched put use and Prime Minister Modi has also reached to check the progress along with a team of 15 doctors and medical teams from AIIMS, RML and Safdarjung hospital, including burn specialists, have left for Kerala. Immediately after the incident PM Modi announced Rs 2 lakh each as compensation to the next of the kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Thousands of people had packed into the Puttingal Devi temple and the narrow lanes around it with total disregard for safety. It has also been learnt temple authorities were not given permission for the fireworks display but and a case has been registered against them.
It all started when a fire cracker fell on a shed where the fireworks were stored, setting off an explosion which has claimed so many lives. As usual help from Indian military has been taken the IAF has deployed 4 choppers including Mi17 and ALH. The Indian Navy has deployed a Dornier and 2 ALH with medical units. INS Kabra, Kalpeni and INS Sukanya have been rushed to Kollam coast with surgical teams on standby at Kochi's Naval Command Hospital.
Kerala CM Oommen Chandy has convened an urgent Cabinet meeting at 3pm in Kollam and has called this incident unprecedented and alarming, adding that the rescue operations at the temple were over -. This tragedy has occurred almost on the eve of assembly elections which are to be held in Kerala.
